How personalised public speaking coaching helped a senior medical professional move beyond over-preparation and communicate with clarity, connection and leadership presence.
When one of my clients, a senior consultant doctor, first came to me for coaching, she was preparing for a television interview about an important area of patient care.
Her knowledge was never in question. The challenge was deciding what to say, how much detail to include and how to make complex medical information meaningful to a non-medical audience.
What began as preparation for one interview has since developed into a much broader coaching journey. As her professional visibility has grown, our work has evolved from interview technique and message clarity into storytelling, leadership presence and learning to trust her own authority.
Finding Clarity
Before our initial sessions, she described herself as:
“Nervous and without a clear framework for the interview I was about to give.”
We began by identifying the real audience for the interview. Rather than speaking as though she were addressing other medical professionals, she needed to communicate directly with patients and families who might be feeling anxious and uncertain.
Together, we worked on:
- simplifying medical language
- identifying one central message for each answer
- using relatable analogies and patient stories
- reducing jargon, statistics and unnecessary detail
- speaking to the interviewer rather than “performing” for the camera
- slowing down and allowing herself time to think
One of her key early insights was the importance of beginning with the audience:
“Thinking about the target audience and using an analogy they can relate to really stood out to me.”
Following those initial sessions, she said she felt:
“Confident, more focused and able to hold a framework in my mind.”
Moving from Perfection to Connection
Like many highly accomplished professionals, this client is exceptionally conscientious. When preparing for something important, her instinct is to work harder, gather more information and rehearse more thoroughly.
However, that level of preparation could sometimes pull her attention inwards. Instead of responding naturally to the person in front of her, she could become preoccupied with remembering the “right” answer or ensuring she had covered every possible point.
A central principle of our work therefore became:
Connection over perfection.
We explored how slowing down can communicate authority, how a pause can appear thoughtful rather than uncertain and why one vivid example is often more powerful than several weaker ones.
The focus was therefore on listening, answering the question she had actually been asked and sharing her knowledge with clarity and warmth.
She later identified this as one of the most valuable parts of the coaching:
“The importance of being genuine and sincere, and communicating to your target audience.”
Making Complex Ideas Human
Much of this client’s work involves sophisticated medical ideas, but the heart of it is profoundly human.
We worked on bringing that human purpose to the foreground.
She practised replacing clinical explanations with accessible language, choosing metaphors only when they made an idea easier to understand and allowing patient experiences to carry the emotional meaning of her work.
She did not need to dilute her expertise. She needed to translate it, creating a bridge between what she knew and what her audience needed to understand.
From Interviews to the Conference Stage
As she received more opportunities to speak publicly, our coaching moved beyond interview preparation and into professional presentation skills.
Ahead of an important talk to fellow medical professionals, we worked on:
- identifying the key beats she wanted to communicate and speaking from them, rather than trying to recall exact wording
- creating a genuine relationship with the audience
- reducing the amount of information on each slide
- choosing one strong image instead of several competing ones for greater impact
- ensuring every visual could be understood immediately
- allowing the audience to concentrate on her rather than trying to read dense presentation material
We used what I call the “Martian test”: if a Martian—someone entirely unfamiliar with the subject—looked at a slide, would its essential meaning still be clear?
The resulting presentation was received extremely well. Her patient stories were particularly powerful because the audience was able to understand not only what she did, but why the work mattered so deeply to her.

Communicating Her Professional Journey
When she was invited to take part in a high-profile interview about her life and career, our work shifted again.
By this point, the challenge was no longer finding enough to say. It was deciding which parts of her story to bring forward and speaking about her own contribution without minimising it.
Her route into medicine had not been straightforward, but the choices she made were consistently guided by her values and her desire to improve patients’ experience of care.
Together, we created a Story Map that helped her organise her story around four key areas.
We worked on leading with the strongest part of her story, selecting only the details that served it and communicating her own contribution clearly, rather than focusing solely on the wider team or the technical aspects of the work.
We wanted the interview to reveal the person behind the professional role: what she cared about, the choices she had made and the purpose behind her work.
The published feature captured exactly that. Alongside her achievements, it conveyed her values, her career journey and the human purpose behind her work.
Developing Leadership Presence
As our work progressed, we moved away from rehearsing answers and focused on how she connected with the listener in the moment.
Under pressure, her attention could turn inwards, making her more conscious of how she was coming across. She practised widening her awareness, allowing greater physical stillness and placing her attention on the person receiving her words.
This helped her stop trying to force a particular state and trust that her preparation was already there. The result was communication that felt more assured, responsive and genuinely connected.
Leadership presence did not come from projecting authority. It emerged when she stopped monitoring herself and gave her full attention to the people in front of her.
A Growing Professional Voice
During our time working together, this client has:
- appeared in a television feature
- taken part in several professional interviews
- been profiled by major medical publications
- delivered talks to respected professional audiences
- received recognition from others within her field
- been invited to speak at a national healthcare conference
Her next speaking opportunity calls for far more than competent public speaking. It requires leadership, authority and the ability to leave an audience with something meaningful.
That is the natural next stage of her journey.
When we began, she was focused on getting the answer right. Over time, the work shifted towards communicating clearly and connecting with her audience. Now, it is about trusting her knowledge, staying present and allowing her natural authority to come through.
