5 Common Mistakes in LAMDA Exams and How to Avoid Them

Mistake #1: Not Enjoying Your LAMDA Performance – How to Love Sharing Your Work

One of the most common mistakes students make in their LAMDA exams is treating the exam like a test, rather than an opportunity to share all the great work they’ve been doing. LAMDA examiners aim to create a supportive environment that helps you perform at your best—they’re there to encourage you, not to intimidate! Remember, their feedback is just one person’s opinion on one day, so don’t stress about chasing a distinction. Instead, focus on enjoying the process of sharing your work. When you’re having fun, the audience will too. So, remind yourself: “Whatever happens, I’m going to enjoy this!”

Mistake #2: Failing to Properly Prepare for Your LAMDA Exam

It’s never a good idea to walk into an exam unprepared. You’ve likely heard the saying, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”—and it’s true. To earn the right to be heard, you must be fully prepared. Rushing into an exam without preparation can lead to stress and poor results. Preparation doesn’t just help you do well in the exam; it builds your confidence as a speaker for life. Public speaking is one of the top fears for over 60% of adults (according to YouGov), so developing these skills early is crucial. Work with a teacher who ensures you’re fully prepared and ready at the right time.

Mistake #3: Disliking Your LAMDA Performance Pieces

I’ve seen this happen a lot over the years. A student is given a piece they don’t enjoy, and it’s clear in their performance. You need to enjoy the material you’re presenting. If you don’t, it will show in your delivery, and both the examiner and the audience will pick up on it. Choose material that excites you—something that resonates with you. The connection between you and your material is key, because if you’re not engaged, the audience won’t be either.

Mistake #4: Not Being Present in Your LAMDA Performance

One of the most important things to learn in performance is how to be present. But what does that really mean? It’s not about meditating for hours—it’s about being aware of yourself and your surroundings during your performance. A good LAMDA tutor will teach you how to be present. A common mistake, especially with younger students, is looking to the teacher for approval while performing (breaking the fourth wall). I always remind my students: own the space, take responsibility for your performance, and don’t look to me for validation. Trust in yourself and your abilities.

Mistake #5: Mismanaging Nerves and Excitement in LAMDA Exams

Nervous or excited energy before a performance is completely normal, but learning to manage it is key. Butterflies in your stomach are natural—channel that energy into something positive. I find breath work to be one of the best ways to calm nerves, but there are many techniques that can work for different people. Once you’re fully prepared, you can trust yourself and perform with confidence. Trusting your preparation makes it easier to manage your energy, stay calm, and perform at your best. Ultimately, managing your energy comes down to believing in yourself, staying composed, and knowing you’re ready for anything. This is the foundation of true confidence as a performer and presenter.
